The Quince Orchard Cougars improved to 7-9 on the season (3-4 in the 4A West Division) as they beat rival Northwest Jaguars at Northwest for the first time in three years 51-38.
The Cougars were led by a balanced attack. Freshmen Anaya Badmus (13 points) and Tatiana Popa (nine points) led the way and were supported by seniors Maggie Regan’s eight points and Yekta Kamali’s six points, as well as sophomore Brie Bush’s seven points and junior Jenna Williams’ six points.
The first quarter was a defensive battle as both teams were out of synch offensively. The quarter ended 3-3 as QO was led by Anaya Badmus’ two points. The Cougars sprinted out to a quick lead in the early stages of the second quarter. Williams and Badmus led the squad with four points each, Regan drained a three, and Bush added another three points on a big and-1 while attacking the rim. The Cougars entered halftime up 19-11.
Quince Orchard extended the lead by four to 34-22 through three quarters. The 15 point outburst was led by Popa and Regan, each with five points. Regan nailed her second three of the game.
Several times in the fourth quarter the Jaguars cut the Cougars lead to single digits, but repeatedly QO got the big basket they needed to extend the lead. Bush and Badmus hit two big buckets driving to the rim and junior Izzy Nicolaou drained two big free throws. Kamali scored all six of her points in the 4th quarter to help stabilize the Cougars.
Quince Orchard returns to action on Wednesday, January 31st as they host the Wootton Patriots. The JV team will play their last game at 5:30 and the varsity game follows at 7:15 pm.
