Eleven Cougar varsity wrestlers travelled to North Hagerstown High School on Friday and Saturday to compete in the 31st annual Hub Cup wrestling tournament. The Hub Cup is one of the most competitive tournaments in the area and this year’s field included 15 public and private school teams from Maryland, Virginia, DC, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. This year, Quince Orchard had one if its strongest showings here in 8 years as eight of QO’s eleven wrestlers placed with four of them making their way to the championship final match. Junior co-captain Jose Echeona (126 lbs), senior co-captain Alejandro Lopez (138 lbs), sophomore Marquez Cooper (170 lb) and junior Jay Bollinger (195 lbs) all lost their championship final bout and earned 2nd place honors. Junior Carlos Guerrero (106 lbs) took 4th place in his weight class. Sophomores Rico Cornejo (120 lbs) and Ryan Jones (182 lbs) finished in 5th and 6th places respectively. Senior Nick Shen (145 lbs) earned 8th place honors. Freshmen Michael Monkevich (132 lbs) picked up a win be decision to add to the Cougars team points total.
QO placed 7th in the team scoring. Carlisle Area High School was the overall team winner.
Only two other teams, host North Hagerstown and tournament runner-up, Urbana, had as many finalists as the Cougar grapplers did.
