Three of Quince Orchard’s 4A/3A West qualifiers placed in the top four to punch their tickets to next weekend’s Maryland State Wrestling tournament.
Senior co-captain Alejandro Lopez won his first two matches with pins to earn himself a spot in the 138 lb championship final match where he would face Clarksburg’s highly ranked Nick Gonzalez. Alejandro held to win in a 1-0 thriller and will now get his name on the Cougar wall of champions as a regional champ.
Junior co-captain Jose Echeona went 3-1 for the weekend to earn his spot as 3rd place winner on the medal stand. His match consolation final against a Manchester Valley’s 126 lb wrestler provided some of the most excitement of the tournament. Trailing 4-2 late in the third period, Jose was able to get his opponent’s back on the mat for a pin with just seconds remaining to secure the win.
Sophomore 182 lber Ryan Jones had wins over opponents from Watkins Mill and Northwest but had two losses to the same Clarksburg wrestler in the quarterfinals and then again in the consolation finals match. Ryan earned 4th place honors.
Sophomore 113 lber Rico Cornejo lost two very close hard fought matches to end his very successful season.
Both Alejandro and Jose are making their second straight trip to the state tournament. This will be Ryan Jones’s first trip to the Maryland state tournament although he qualified and wrestled in North Carolina’s state tournament last season as a freshman.
The Maryland 4A/3A State Tournament will be held on Friday, March 2nd and Saturday March 3rd at the ShowPlace Arena in Upper Marlboro.
