Six Cougars qualified for and competed in the MPSSAA State Championships on February 19th, 2019. Each one of them set or tied personal bests, including 2 new school records!
The lone qualifier for the boys team was junior Steven Williams in the shot put. Steven placed 12th with a put of 42-11, a personal best by almost a foot. In his first year of throwing, Steven has improved by almost 5 feet and now can boast of the #11 throw in school history indoors.
On the girls side, junior Maeve Smith got the day started off in the high jump with a leap of 4-10, tying her season and personal best. She finished 12 overall in the state and now ranks tied for third in school history.
Junior Kyra Lyles bettered her own school record of 1:18.91 with her 1:18.84, 6th place showing. As the top Montgomery County finisher, Kyra’s place was the team’s highest finish of the day. She finishes this season as the school record holder in the 300, the 500, and as a member of the 4×200 team.
Capping the evening off was the girls 4×200 meter relay team of Lyles, Danejah Kyle, Zakaiyah Bright, and Alexis Martin. They powered their way to an 8th place finish out of the slower heat. Their time of 1:47.65 improves upon their own school record that they set at the region meet.
