Following their state-qualifying performances at the 4A West Regional meet on 2/8, seniors Kenny Williams, Chris Thoms, & Isabelle Sajonia along with junior Zakaiyah Bright and sophomore Maeve Smith represented the Cougars well at the Maryland State Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.
The highlight on the girls’ side was undoubtedly, Bright in the 55m dash. Zakaiyah started her day with a huge personal best of 7.41 in the preliminary round to qualify the final. She upped the ante even more in the final with an even bigger personal best of 7.31 to place 4th overall. Her time ranks her at #2 in school history, behind Melanie Cathey’s converted time of 7.14 from 1999. Sophomore Maeve Smith tied her personal best of 4-08 in the high jump to place 19th overall. Senior Isabelle Sajonia was well off her best, but gutted her way to a 14th place finish in the 3200 run.
Seniors Kenny Williams and Chris Thoms represented the boys’ squad with each of them scoring points for the team in a very deep state field. Kenny placed the highest with a season best in the high jump of 6-02 and 4th place finish. Chris was given the difficult task of trying to score in the 3200 from the slower of 2 heats. His time of 9:58, was not his best, but was enough for him to win his heat and achieve his goal of scoring with a 7th place finish.
This meet concludes a great season of competition for the QO Indoor Track & Field teams.
