The Quince Orchard boys JV soccer team continues to seek its first win, as they ended their campaign against the Gaithersburg Trojans in a 2-2 tie. .
Just 1:30 into the game, Chris Salcido was tripped in the box, setting up a penalty kick taken by captain Jason Sanchez. Sanchez blasted his shot into the lower right hand corner to give the Cougars a quick 1-0 lead, and his second goal of the season. Unfortunately, there were very few highlights in the first half for the Cougars, as they played with little energy. With just under eighteen minutes left in the first half, Gaithersburg tied the game at one with a chip shot over Alec Sbily’s head. Ten minutes later, QO had their only opportunity to break the tie in the first half, as Nico de la Torre’s shot was stopped by the Trojans’ diving goalie, keeping the game tied going into halftime.
Whatever Coach Loutoo said to the Cougars at halftime clearly worked, as they came out aggressive, putting a great deal of pressure on Gaithersburg. Just 2:10 into the second half, QO forced an own goal by Gaithersburg, set up by Danny Pomerance to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. As the Cougars continued to pressure Gaithersburg, Jason Sanchez took a free kick just outside the box that resulted in a fantastic, last second fingertip save by the GHS goalie, keeping the lead at just one. For the first fifteen minutes of the second half, ball control was dominated by the Cougars. With just 10:15 left in the game, the Trojans were able to capitalize off a defensive turnover by the Cougars to tie the game at two. The score remained tied at two going into overtime.
During each of the two overtime halves, the large majority of play took play in the middle of the field, as the teams exchanged possession, and ultimately the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
QO’s next game is at Poolesville HS on Monday September 19 at 5:30pm.
